Iontophoresis therapy
The physical therapy procedure, so called Iontophoresis
is the introduction of ionized substances into the body through the skin or mucous
membrane with an electrical current. Due to the current flow, the penetration of a
substance is promoted through the skin. The quantity of substance introduced by
iontophoresis depends on the strength and duration of action of the electric current.
The technique of iontophoresis was in the 18th Century first described.
In the area of dermatology, the use of iontophoresis
therapy reached its greatest popularity in the treatment of hyperhidrosis.
Experimental work has shown that a reduction of sweat can be achieved through Tap Water
Iontophoresis.
Has every Iontophoresis machine the same
effect?
Yes, generally you can say that every machine has the same
effect - the reduction of excessive sweat. Nevertheless, you should take
the time to inform yourself, which machine is the best suited for you.
The best device we have available is our "pulsed
current" unit, the Idromed 5 PC. With the Idromed 5 PC you will not feel the current
as much as you would with other Iontophoresis devices. This does not mean that the Idromed
DC (direct current) is ineffective, however the DC device causes sometimes skin irritation
at a higher current setting – this can be very uncomfortable for children or those
who havevery sensitive skin. These irritations do not appear so often with the PC device.
The PC unit uses a ‘pulsed current’ whereas the DC device uses a
‘direct current’. This new Iontophoresis technology helps to prevent skin
irritation and allows to increase the current settings, to achieve better results.
To give a better explanation about this new technology: an Idromed PC device running at a
current of 25mA would feel similar to an Idromed DC device running at a current of 5mA.
You see, with the PC the setting goes higher but there is far less irritation caused. The
higher the level you can adjust the current to, the more effect you will have.
You will have the same results with direct current and
pulsed current units, but the Idromed PC is a must in following cases:
- Sensitive patients (specially children)
- Underarm usage
- A more delicate treatment
Against Hyperhidrosis, the
Iontophoresis-therapy using only tap-water with either the Idromed® 5 DC or PC - is an
appropriate and reliable solution. Without drugs, with very few side effects and without
operations, Hyperhidrosis can be treated successfully in most cases.
